This blog for the most part is focused on my personal homeschool journey with my son. Along the way, I hope to share with you reviews of the services and materials that we use and consider for our journey. I am developing some custom content for him, and in time, that as well will be available through this time. But today, i'd like to take a minute to share with you a service that I am providing.
If you're a homeschooling family you've probably already looked into what the requirements are in your particular state. In the State of Florida, homeschoolers must register with the county school district and complete an annual evaluation. One way of completing that evaluation is to have your student's annual progress evaluated by a teacher certified in an academic subject area in the State of Florida.
Why does my experience lead me to believe i'm not just authorized to do this, but that your family should select me to perform this service? I currently hold multiple K-12 certifications, which are helpful in evaluating a range of content. For the last several years I've overseen curriculum at a local, academically rigorous 6-12 high school and before that was District Supervisor for industrial and engineering career and technology programs up through the post-secondary level. As a classroom engineering teacher my style was always project based and I'm comfortable with a range of assessment methods and non-traditional activities.
Families with older students will benefit with my familiarity with both elite universities and local career and technical programs. Students who hope to continue their studies will want to ensure that they've met any requirements necessary for entry into those programs. I am happy to provide that guidance during the portfolio evaluation process.
For younger students, my close association with State of Florida Early Education teachers with Reggio and Montessori experience means an understanding of a wide range of strategies for educating and assessing learning. New unschoolers who may be unsure of what the portfolio may look like for them, can get assistance navigating this process for the first time.
